TREE AID was established as a UK charity in 1987 by a group of foresters in response to the famine in Ethiopia. They wanted to provide a long term solution once the emergency relief efforts ended. They believed that trees could significantly reduce the vulnerability of communities in rural Africa’s drylands to drought and famine. Since 1987 TREE AID has helped over 500,000 people plant more than 10,000,000 trees. We work in the drylands of Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali and Niger and isolated areas of Ethiopia. Places where people live in extreme poverty and have little food, money or opportunity to improve their lives.

TREE AID’s Vision: Thriving, sustainable communities across the drylands of Africa

TREE AID’s Mission: To enable people living in the drylands of Africa to unlock the potential of trees to reduce poverty and protect the environment

At TREE AID, we believe that tackling poverty and environmental protection are inseparable. We build on the self-reliance of the communities we work with, increasing not only their chances of survival but also maintaining their dignity. At the same time, we help those communities to invest their time in protecting the environment, building its richness and health not just for today but for generations to come. We tackle the driving problems behind the misuse of forests to ensure sustainable change , and help provide solutions to the challenges affecting communities . We work across four themes: natural resource management and agroforestry , forest governance, enterprise development and trade, and food security and nutrition.
