‘Grant-giving for Economic Freedom: The Lemonaid/ ChariTea Model’

plants
Event Description

The growing focus in our sector on localisation, decolonisation and shifting power has thrown up numerous questions about the traditional structures of grant-giving and management. Many of us are reliant on grants to fund our work; others of us give and manage grants to implementing partners.

In this online SWIDN learning session, we’re delighted to be hearing from Aileen Puhlmann from the Lemonaid & ChariTea Foundation. The Lemonaid and ChariTea foundation is a German-based non-profit that works to contribute to the sustainable improvement of social, economic and ecological structures in the Global South. They work on the premise that unequal global economic structures can be mitigated by providing economic freedom to people living in the global regions worst affected by this inequality. The Lemonaid & ChariTea Foundation focuses on building up the resources of economically marginalised people and placing responsibility and ownership for project implementation into the hands of their local partners.

This session will include an overview of the work of the Lemonaid and ChariTea Foundation, including their innovative source of funding through the sale of Lemonaid and ChariTea drinks, as well as their approach to grant-giving through entrepreneurial support.

This lunch time session is particularly suited to SWIDN members who give and manage grants, those who fundraise for and manage programmes, businesses in pursuit of doing business for good, and all of those who work in parts of the world most marginalised by unequal global economic structures. We particularly encourage SWIDN members to attend alongside their implementing partners from lower and middle income countries.

After hearing from Aileen, we’ll divide into two breakout rooms to connect with each other and share learning in greater detail. We’ll focus these on:

  1. Practical ways to support economic freedom through programmes
  2. Innovative grant-giving models

You can read more about the Lemonaid and ChariTea Foundation here.

If you would be interested in further training on this and other economic justice issues, please let us know by adding your name here. This training would seek to address the following:

  • Understanding the impact and implications of unequal global economic structures
  • Understanding your role in challenging these (suitable for businesses, charities and donors)
  • Educating supporters, clients and customers on economic inequality and their power and responsibility to affect change
  • The role of advocacy in tackling economic inequality – who, what and what to say
